If you study various mythologies and oddball stuff you start to notice a pattern. In greek and roman myths there are hundreds of types of nymphs: tree, ocean, forest, etc. In certain cultures an ancestor house is kept on the premises. You also notice that souls that don't get to their destination tend to be angry: the tibetan book of the dead, the egyptian book of the dead, the various ferrymen - they all serve similar functions. They do have unique cultural identities, I'm not trying to over simplify. Basically, you notice that "mostly good spirits" have a place of dwelling. "Bad spirits" do not. Think about the psychology behind poltergeists, hauntings, demonic possession: they are all entities looking for a place to dwell, and aren't seen as welcoming at first. Empty and abandoned places will attract things that are roaming, that don't have a place to dwell, are lost, etc. (Sometimes even us living mortals fall into that thinking.) Mason jars have become a basic witch tool in the last fifty years or so. (I'm not sure when.) Broken and decaying things give off the same energy as entities that are roaming or displaced. So, when I sense something hostile in a place - I personally don't go in catholic guns blazing; shouting exorcisms, banishing, burning sage. You're just sending it to someone else territory. I'll make my power known, and offer it a place of dwelling. A pretty mason jar filled with rusty and broken items, old cigarettes, whatever, It's like having feral cat in your barn. You can continually shoot them when they come around. Or. You can feed the one that shows up and it keeps the rest of the feral cats away. I've "homed" so many "nasties" (as I call them) over the years that everyone in our family has one as a guardian and companion now.
